Overview
Machu Picchu, also known as the Lost City of the Inca, is an iconic symbol of Peru and the most important archeological site in all of South America. Discovered in 1911, the immense stone structures of the Incas, probably built around 1450 AD, have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983 and was named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World in 2007. Once you make it to the site above the valley at some 8,000 feet of altitude, you can visit the Guardhouse and Funerary Rock for mind-blowing views, see an Incan astrological wonder called the temple of the Sun, or take a semi-challenging hike up the Huayna Picchu trail. In fact, you can enjoy an unmatched and mesmerizing panoramic train journey to get to Machu Picchu town first. Your 3.5-hour journey starts from Cusco (Poroy Train Station) to Aguas Calientes (or 1 hour and 40 minutes from Ollantaytambo to MP) in style through the alpine meadows nestled amongst the green, brown and white peaks, the intricately formed valleys, layers of handmade Inca farming terraces, ridged snowcapped mountains and sub-tropical jungle near the Amazon up to Aguas Calientes town.
